Message to All Readers

Due to life changing events, Climate Guy will be on hiatus for a few days.

I think this is a good enough excuse, don't you? My son. Handsome little guy. Mom and baby are doing well. Now, this makes my mission to raise awareness and combat Climate Change even more important. I take my responsibility to leave the planet better than I found it for my little boy seriously.  You don't have to like Whitney Houston to agree that children are our future. But what kind of future they will have is up to us.

While I am away, take a look back through some of my more popular posts from the past 10 months. You can find the links on the right hand side of this page. Be sure to leave a comment. You can also follow Climate Guy 73 by signing up on the right.

    See you soon!

Tesla, Batteries and the Energy Revolution

Tesla announced its new battery storage system last week. Tony Stark himself- oops, sorry- I mean Elon Musk himself introduced the new energy storage system that could be the game changer renewable energy advocates have been waiting for to jumpstart the Energy Revolution. You can read about Tesla and Mr. Stark's...(damn, did it again...) Mr. Musk's breakthrough and announcement here.

If you visit this site, you already know I am a HUGE advocate for clean renewable energy, sustainability and energy independence. Energy storage has long been the missing link when it comes to energy production from renewables. Opponents of solar and wind power have often moaned that because the Sun goes down or that the wind stops blowing, renewables are unreliable and cannot replace fossil fuels as out main source of energy. Well, I think Tony's- (shit) Elon's announcement basically tells those people that they can "Suck it!"

An energy storage system for homes and businesses as well as for utility companies is a game-changer. It is the missing link between energy production and usage/demand. The biggest argument against renewables is that they are unreliable for the reasons I mentioned above. With a battery storage system in place, one can make energy with their PV system during the day and store it to use at night. Or they can store wind energy when the wind is blowing and use it when the winds die down. Here is a great article from the Washington Post that talks about Tesla's plans and the coming "Energy Revolution".

     Anyone seen this cartoon before?

You may remember it from my post on March 31st:  Electric Cars and Dirty Energy.  In that post, I talked about how this meme represented an opportunity to be more sustainable. Instead of using energy from coal-fired power plants, you could use a solar array to charge your electric car, eliminating fuel costs and CO2 emissions. The Tesla Battery takes this idea one step further...and its a big step! Now, when you are at work, your PV system can make a ton of energy and store it in the battery. When you come home, that energy in the battery can be used to charge your car and power the house when the family is home watching tv, making dinner, surfing the net and playing video games. Sustainable energy system. Holy crap!

Already, I have had some friends dismiss the Tesla Battery because of cost. If you check back to my post Electric Cars and Dirty Energy, you will see how a broke down what a person could save in gas by driving an electric car charged by a solar array. The payback on the Return On Investment starts immediately with these systems. Money for fuel is now earmarked for to pay-off the array. Now, imagine not only saving money in gas, but in utility bills as well! I realize that the cost is quite substantial, but Banks realize that Solar is a good investment. The numbers don't lie. You reduce your monthly utility and fuel costs by going solar, which frees up capital to pay the bank back it's money. You make the Bank whole, and you reduce your monthly bills once the system is paid off. You were already spending that money before, except now there is an end in sight. You are eliminating those costs completely after a few years.

Americans love their credit and love to finance things. Here's an opportunity to finance something that is worth more after it is paid off, unlike your car, that drops in value as soon as you drive it off the lot. You are already spending the money for gas and electricity right now. Investing in solar, a battery system for your home and an electric car transfers what you are spending for gas and electricity to paying back your loan. Tac credits for solar, the battery and an electric car significantly reduce your initial upfront costs, which means the government pays you for doing this. Winner winner chicken dinner!

And THAT is what is meant by the Energy Revolution. The Tesla Battery pack means no more blackouts, no more rate hikes, no more transmission fees and hidden costs. No more days at the gas station, filling up with Super Unleaded because Regular is "out" or the pump is broken. All it takes is thinking outside the box a little bit. Outside the box, where power is clean, renewable and works for you. Thanks Elon Musk! I just can't wait until he builds the Iron Man suit.

Cloudy Days

I took this picture this morning. I love how the clouds looked with the Sun streaming through. The fact I got the solar farm in the shot was just a bonus. I've taken so many of that thing over the past few months. Of course the one driving by at 60 mph from the car is the best one. A nice way to wake up in the morning, yes?

Believe it or not, the clouds don't stop the solar array from making electricity. This a common misconception that many people have about solar energy. Many detractors of solar power like to wax on about how cloudy days mean no electricity. As usual, they don't know what they are talking about.
Think about it this way: On a cloudy day, is it dark like it would be at 2am? No, it isn't. Why not? Because the Sun's rays still penetrate the clouds. Even the most menacing storm clouds don't make it so dark that you can't see. So, the fact that there is enough light to allow you to see when it's cloudy means the Sun's rays are still hitting the Earth, and any solar panels positioned to catch them. (Do I sound like a Public Service Announcement?)

It is even possible, under the right conditions, to produce more electricity on a partly cloudy day than on a hot sunny day. PV panels can get too hot from all that sunshine and sometimes part of the array will shutdown so the panels can cool down. Cloud cover keeps the temperature low, which can keep more panels cooler during the day, thus allowing them to operate longer. All that can mean more energy produced!

(The heads of anti-solar people everywhere just exploded. Because I'm sure they all read this blog, right?

So, on cloudy days, photovoltaics keep right on converting sunlight into energy. That means when it's cloudy, you can still charge your computer, wash your kids dirty clothes in the washing machine, go for a walk without a flashlight or turn the tv on so you can watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs. You know, all the important things in life.

The more you know...

Reduce, Reuse...Recycle Less

One of the most well known phrases in the environmental movement is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. But, after having conversations, giving presentations and interacting with others in my travels, it has become apparent to me that many people skip the first two R's and go straight to the last one: Recycle. While recycling is important, without the first two steps, recycling only slows the inevitable.

Resources are still needed to make new products, even when using recycled material. Products made from recycled material still need about 67% of their materials from somewhere else; there are not any plastic bottles or toys that are made from 100% recycled material. Hence, the Reduce and Reuse steps in the process. The idea is to reduce what you use that needs to be thrown away or recycled. Then, reuse the things that you buy that are not single use items. (Single use items can give off toxic materials that are harmful to your health. Not to mention it's just incredibly wasteful to use a plastic bag one time and then throw it into the yard for the wind to carry away.)

Check out this link from David Suzuki to learn more about how to full implement the 3 R's in your home and business. Spread the word! Make it a contest with your neighbors and friends: who can recycle less, reuse more and reduce your environmental footprint. Everyone wants to win at something, right? How's your chance to put your neighbors in their place, and save some money too.

Maryland's Stormwater Bill

Over the last few years, I was one of many people to push for the new Stormwater Bill in Maryland to be passed. It addressed the antiquated Stormwater systems that dumped polluted water from our streets into the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. It also will raise money to fix and replace leaky septic systems that were adding to the declining health of our state's most valuable resource. Many stormwater systems were designed and installed over 50 years ago. They are outdated and need to be modernized. To see the new Governor push to repeal the bill is heartbreaking. The health of the Bay affects the health of millions of people, will cost thousands of jobs if left to get worse and lead to the loss of thousands of species of plant and animal life.

The what upsets me the most is that the opponents of the bill have labeled it a "rain tax", with people who do not fully understand the language and purpose of the bill believing they have to pay a tax every time it rains. That's absurd! People have just made the jump from the term "Rain Tax" to thinking they are paying more in taxes each time a storm rolls through. I guess snow isn't included in that, huh? Can people be so lazy that they don't even read the language of passed legislation before they start to argue against it?

Many against the bill acknowledge the declining health of the Chesapeake and refuse to swim or let their children swim in its waters. Yet they don't even think twice about eating crabs. Oysters and rockfish that are caught in the ever increasing pollution.
Like so many in the world, they want to reap the rewards at the cost of the future. Clean water means healthy things to eat, more jobs and water safe to swim in. You are going to prevent that if the Stormwater Legislation is overturned. Think about it. Can you afford an extra $6.25 a month to clean up the waters in the Chesapeake? What if it meant it would be safer to go crabbing or fishing or waterskiing?

Learn the real facts and intent of the Maryland Stormwater Remediation Legislation

Following Up On the Senate Snowball

If you read the my last post, you probably saw the video of Senator James Inhofe dismissing Climate Change  by showing everyone in the Senate Chamber a snowball. He insisted that because it snowed in DC, that global warming was not happening. As usual, the Senator (R-OK) was talking out of his ass by choosing to ignore data from his very own state.

The Capital Weather Gang pointed out last month that while the polar vortex has descended on the Northeast, bringing record cold temperatures and snowfall, Senator Inhofe's home state of Oklahoma was breaking records for the hottest day ever recorded in January. That's right, temperatures in Oklahoma and throughout the Midwest were more than 30 degrees ABOVE normal, breaking records that have stood for over 100 years (or at least since records have been taken).

Then, to my complete delight, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) took Inhofe to task. Whitehouse pointed out how many organizations and scientific societies accepted that climate change is real and were taking steps to deal with the repercussions. Senator Whitehouse pointed out that people like Inhofe ignore the facts and the actions being taken by companies like Ford and Miller Brewing company...shit, even Walmart accepts that climate change is happening!

Senator Inhofe thinks God is going to fix all this for us. He better hope so, since the Senator from Oklahoma isn't doing anything to address it, besides attacking science and ignoring the best scientific minds in the world.

Paid to Deny?

Dr. Willie Soon apparently has been paid by some of the biggest greenhouse gas emitting companies in the fossil fuel industry to say that Anthropogenic Climate Change is not happening. Multiple media outlets have written about the story. Senator is calling for a hearing to get to the bottom of this. Some of you may ask, "is that really necessary? A Senate hearing?" Yes, it is necessary. Why is it a big deal that the scientists that is the darling of conservative politicians and the fossil fuel industry has been paid over $1.2 million dollars while he says climate change isn't happening? Well, here are a few reasons:

1. He didn't report the "funding" for over $1 million given to his research since 2008. It speaks to his integrity and suggests that he was hiding something, which takes more than a chunk out of his credibility. It also suggests that he is in it for the money, which would explain why he is in the minority who dismiss Climate Change as a hoax.

2. The companies and organizations funding his "research" are the same companies who stand to lose billions of dollars if climate change regulations are enacted. Exxon Mobile, the American Petroleum Institute and one of the Koch brothers charitable foundations, to name a few. Why aren't they funding real scientists who study climate? If their claims that global warming and climate change aren't happening, why not spend millions to fund the 97% of the leading climate scientists to discover that on their own? Because it is happening, that's why.

3. The Tobacco companies did this very thing back int he 1960's. They paid doctors to say smoking didn't cause cancer and did not kill you. We see how all of that turned out.

4. Finally, its a big deal because it means people are being paid to lie. To you, to me, to the American people, to the rest of the world. These companies are trying to make it seem like there is an equal debate about the facts and findings about Climate Change. 97-3 is not an equal and healthy debate. Its a landslide. even with a margin for error of +/- 3%, those scientists not being paid by Big Oil and Big Coal win.

What Soon is doing is illegal. He has been lying and now there is a money trail that many suspected was there. Disclosing it before now and standing up for his scientific opinions on Climate Change would have lent him more credibility. Now, he just looks like he was less than honest.

Clueless

"These are scientists that cannot be challenged..."

- Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), referring to a group of scientists he claims do not believe Climate Change is happening, or being caused by humans.

That statement reveals that Senator Inhofe, and the scientists he refers to, do not understand the scientific method. All findings should be challenged. Every time. Challenging someone's findings will help determine if they were correct, partially correct, incorrect or full of shit with what they claim. Without challenging scientific ideas and theories, anyone could make up anything about anything. Discovery and innovation are born from hard work and a dedication to finding the truth, not from lies and deceit.

If we followed the Senators lead, then that imagine the possiblities. I could announce that I discovered that when big orange elephants with pink minivans all drove around the world at 50 mph, in the opposite direction of the rotational spin of the planet, it will cause my dog to pee behind the garage in the morning if its sunny. It's true! Because I said so and you can't challenge me.

Friday Round Up

President Obama this week designated three new National Monuments, which promptly prompted Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO) from calling the president "King Barack". No, President Obama is not acting like a king, he's doing the job the people elected him to do...twice. Teddy Roosevelt (a Republican) started this land preservation over a century ago, and every president since has used it. What's wrong with preserving wilderness from time to time? I don't think I will ever understand how someone could look at the immense and powerful beauty of the natural world, only to want to dig it up to make a buck.

Governor Scott Walker has made almost $2 billion in tax cuts since becoming Governor of Wisconsin in 2011. Now, the state faces a shortfall next year that will most likely reach--wait for it--$2 billion! (Governor Walker is skipping state debt payments due this coming May, which he is allowed by the terms of the loan to do one time.) It helps cash flow right now, but it could come back to bite them in the ass next year, when the shortfall is expected to grow. In order to make those initial tax cuts, Walker cut spending to education, public media and--SURPRISE!--the Department of Natural Resources, among others. I know balancing budgets is important, as well as controlling costs. But why is it always schools, clean water and NPR that have to cut back?

The Lenten Fast for Climate Justice is a 40 day fast during Lent, and many Catholics using the opportunity to demand action on the climate crisis. Catholics from around the world will be fasting in hopes to raise awareness and get people to take climate change seriously. It warms my heart to see the Catholic Church be all in on the subject of Climate Change. See, everyone, there is hope!  Even Pope Frank is on board!

The One with the Plug-In Porsche

Saw this baby in Heidelberg. I couldn't get a better picture because of the lighting, but you can make out the Porsche emblem on the front of the car. You can also see the power cord in the back. I saw it from about 50 feet away and had to walk over and see.

The future my friends. Ain't it nice looking?

The Vote on Global Warming

The US Senate will once again...that's right...AGAIN...vote on whether or not there is really such a thing as Anthropogenic Global Warming. They did this before, and I guess they didn't like the outcome. As often as they bring Man-made Climate Change up for a vote, maybe they got mixed up and think they are actually repealing Obamacare.

Hey Senate! Can't you do something more constructive, like pass legislation to upgrade the national highways and power grid? Or keep the crooks on Wall Street from making bad investments with taxpayer dollars? Let the qualified people with Physics and Chemistry and Meteorological degrees handle the Science stuff. You need to govern.

10 Questions You Should Know How to Answer

As you know, I am a member of the Climate Reality Leadership Corp. I recommend you visit their site and have a look around. There is a s--t ton of good stuff over there; from articles on climate change to some humorous antidotes (it doesn't always have to be gloom and doom, right?) to how you can join or help. climaterealityproject.org

Today, I am borrowing from them a list of 10 questions that everyone should know and be able to answer. These are the most common questions asked about Climate Change. If you are ever confronted by a climate change denier (who can be fairly adamant that the majority of the world's people are suffering from a mass delusion), knowing how to answer these the right way will be helpful. (And, you can also research the answers to discover that they are based on the BILLIONS of climate observations and studies and records that we have been collecting over the centuries).

Click the link to go to the Climate Reality page or click the images above and below for the full list of questions.

An Off Day...Sorta

Hey all! Sorry but the next two days I will be a little out of touch. My wife and I are visiting with our home builder to pick out the different things for the new house. Very exciting! For us anyway. We are stuck in a two bedroom flat with 3 animals and lots of mold right now, so the new house will be our Mecca. Schwörer Haus is our builder, and they practice sustainable forestry, offer a wide array of recycled and sustainable materials, operate under a fair trade policy and are a market leader of homes equipped with renewable energy.

The new house will have a 5kw Solar array on a south facing roof, a Solar Thermal system for hot water, 30cm insulted walls, an air exchange system that keeps the humidity and air quality at peak levels. a hybrid geo-thermal system that uses pipes and outside air to heat or cool saline to regulate the temperature no matter what time of year and space for a back-up battery system to store excess solar power to be used in off-production hours. Not to mention, we will also install a green roof on the garage to filter rainfall and will run pipes for a future cistern to store rainwater so we can utilize it to wash clothes and flush the toilets. All of those, along with passive solar and energy saving appliances and LED lightbulbs, we will reduce our CO2 footprint (when compared with our home in America) by over 70% while conserving water!

I will post pics tomorrow of all the cool stuff we see. Check out Schwörer Haus on their home site. I can't find it in English right now, but if you speak French, Spanish or Italian, your in luck. You can at least look at the pictures.

So, when you hear or read that someone said renewables and energy efficiency won't work, send them to Southern Germany. They can see for themselves that homes at a higher altitude and higher latitude can be powered just fine without fossil fuels.

Questions for Deniers

I read a lot. Its my job. Whether it's articles about the environment, hockey or Batman V. Superman, I'm always reading. I proof read my blog posts (most of the time), I reread and rewrite my short stories and when I'm not working I am reading a book. (Right now, I'm reading "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer...awesome. Read it.) Anyway, I came across this gem yesterday in my usual sweep of the internet for all things Climate Change.

I have developed a process, which I have refined over the past year or so, to help me keep up to date on all things Climate Change and Environment. Not everything out there you read is fact (which many people don't realize). So I do my best to weed out the crazy (I'm looking at you Newsmaxx) and the vague and unsupported (Wochit, get your act together!) in order to get some concrete and logical information to share. There is a lot of unreliable sites with unsubstantiated bullshit out there. I hunt down the accredited and reliable outlets, the ones that use real data and cite their sources, and share what I think is relevant and what is supported with real research and studies. Although, sometimes I share the humorous and head slapping things because you have to laugh sometimes, right?

Here is a list of 10 questions to ask Climate Change Deniers from Moron Watch. Don't let the Moron Watch name detract from the direct and valid questions they provide. While some of these questions are just mean spirited and sarcastic, some are effective when faced with someone who accuses you of being an alarmist. If you frequently engage or are engaged by Climate Change Deniers and get bogged down in there circle-talk meant to confuse, these questions may come in handy. There is nothing like being blunt and asking someone to logically and effectively support their argument. Getting them to realize that they can't do it may jog some of them into questioning what they have been force fed.

Here are the most effective ones, in my opinion:

  • If there is a "scientific debate", why do only 24 out of 13,950 peer-reviewed papers dispute man-made climate change?
  • If there is "science on both sides", why do billionaires secretly have to throw hundreds of millions of dollars into denials propaganda?
  • Why are there no climate scientists as spokesmen for the denial side? (Have them name one to prove this assertion wrong.)
  • Why do you not believe climate scientists about present warming, but believe them when they say the climate changed in the past?
  • Who knows more about climate? a) Climate scientists, b) Economists, c) Oil Companies, d0 Michele Bachman?

What's An Expert Anyway?

"I'm not a scientist, but..." I have heard that so much in the past year it make me want to pull my nose hair out with a pair of salad tongs. If you hear someone say that, chances are you are about to hear something extremely ignorant and incredibly stupid. If I hear one more politician weigh in on scientific debate with that opening line of bullshit, without actually consulting a scientist, I think I'll get an aneurysm.

People go around saying things like "I'm no expert, but I think physics is a bunch of shit," all the time these days. It continues a long tradition of ridiculing new ideas in order to maintain the status quo. The Earth is round? Off with his head! The Earth is NOT the center of the Universe? Take away that man's telescope! Jesus died for our sins? Cool! Let's live like there are no consequences! Humans have a unique talent to ignore the obvious and make up the most farcical arguments out of fear.

What else could we say to show our ignorance in the face of fact? Imagine what our world would be like if we could just dismiss logic and reason? Here you go...feel free to share the ones you think of in the comments.

"I'm not a teacher, but math isn't important."
"I'm not an auto mechanic, but black smoke pouring out from under the hood is normal."
"I'm not a rocket scientist, but it isn't that hard to fly to Mars."
"I'm not a doctor, but AIDS isn't that dangerous."
"I'm not a pilot, but flying a fighter jet is simple."
"I'm not a soldier, but combat isn't dangerous."
"I'm not an architect, but I don't see why buildings need a foundation."
"I'm not a woman, but birthing a child is a piece of cake."
"I'm not a writer, but punctuation doesn't really matter."
"I'm not a computer programmer, but binary isn't necessary."
"I'm not a musician, but writing your own music is a waste of time."
     "I'm not a psychiatrist, but bi-polar isn't a real thing."
"I'm not a farmer, but that's an easy job."
"I'm not an Ice Road Trucker, but driving across a frozen lake is the safest job in the world."
"I'm not an engineer, but how hard can it be to design a bridge?"
"I'm not a lawyer, but killing unarmed black men isn't illegal."

Friday's Review

Hope you have all enjoyed your week. I decided for today I would share some articles that I read over the past few days. Feel free to peruse them while you work hard at not working on this 5th day of December.

First up is the article from Business Insider that details how the US could cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions by up to 80% by 2050 with little or no effect on the economy. Yes, its true. The science and the dollars work on this. So plant a tree, by a Volt and read this article.

Second up is an article from the Washington Post that outlines the major differences between traditional Republicans and Tea Partiers when it comes to science. Very interesting and telling, if you ask me. If you're a Tea Partier, accept the latest scientific theories, acknowledge the existence of Climate Change and like my blog...you're in the wrong political party. Just saying'. Its a pretty eye opening piece, which you can read here.

The last one I want to share comes from the Mother Nature Network. Apparently, graphene membranes are so awesome, they can be used to line Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Which would make it possible, if not practical, to suck the free hydrogen out of the air to power your car. Oi? What Oil? Graphene membranes are the future.

This whole Climate Conversation is always so dour and dark. So today I am sharing some positives. Enjoy your weekend.

Streamlining How We Do It

The House passed a new law last week that limits the number of scientists that can serve on the Science Advisory Board, the group that advises the EPA on all things science. So, that basically means that in order to protect the environment, the EPA will have to listen to the industries that are doing the polluting instead of the people who study the effects the pollution has on the environment and the public health. Its about time, if you ask me. I was getting tired of those poor corporations and industries getting picked on all the time. Thank God someone finally stood up for their rights to pollute. Now that that action was taken, it should open the door to take other just as important actions in order to fix our government.

Expanding on the EPA ruling, a new bill being put together now in the House would remove all atmospheric scientists and oceanographers from being able to advice the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Those pesky oceanographers think they know so much. Well, its about time we took them down a notch, don't you think? And the atmospheric "experts"? Please. Anyone can claim to be an expert. I'm not even sure what those guys do. So its good they can't slow down real progress anymore. Besides, all those models and charts, it's too confusing.

There's another bill that will also address the Department of Education and all of its issues. The bill proposes to eliminate any former teachers and administrators from advising the Executive Branch on Education. There is too much infighting in schools now as it is, with "No Child Left Behind" and the Core Lessons that no one understands. Teachers shouldn't have to handle classrooms full of 30 or 50 students. That's too many. Everyone knows that. But we don't need new teachers or more schools. Those are too difficult to come by, and super expensive. We need less students. Its about time we put someone in charge of education who has no idea what it is like to be in a classroom and who can cut off the withering appendage that is overcrowding.

A proposal to revamp the a key branch of the Justice Department is gaining momentum as well. This idea would require that only non-lawyers are allowed to hold the office of Attorney General and it's deputies. Law is so complicated. Expecting one person to be able to understand it all is unrealistic. So why not put someone in a position of power who understands nothing? You want Justice? Let's hire big game hunters or mercenaries. Those guys know how to bring it. Besides, it's not like the Attorney General does anything anyway, right? I mean, in all my life I have never even seen the Attorney General wear his uniform. That's just disrespectful to all of our veterans.

There are other burgeoning ideas that should be on the floor soon. Like the proposition to eliminate engineers from advising the Department of Transportation on things like bridge and tunnel projects or rail upgrades. (Have you ever talked to an engineer? Arrogant! Think they know everything like geometry and math. Good riddance.) Or the motion to eliminate the Securities and Exchange Commission completely so those victims that run Wall Street can get back to work without any interference. There is also swelling support to dismantle US Immigration Services and just closing off the borders completely. We can have gun owners man the border from then on, since we need the man power and those guys and gals will do it for free. Someone needs to protect our jobs.

These are hard choices that we need to make, people. Letting things like science, logic or reason determine our direction into the future would be a terrible mistake. I for one think its about time we do everything we can to make this country great again even if that means poisoning every citizen, failing to educate those who deserve an education and ignoring all those so called scientific "experts" that work in the basement of the science building. No more egg-heads! They are too hard to follow, impossible to understand and make my brain hurt. And they are hypocrites, right? I mean, aren't pocket protectors bad for the environment?
